Get the rebates coming to you!

In general, there are some tasks that women seem more apt to do than men. Filing for product rebates is one of them. According to general research, women are more likely to remember to fill out the forms and jump through the hoops required to apply for the rebate. Since it's up to you, ladies, know how to effectively apply for rebates and avoid scams.
Rebates are an important marketing tool for selling merchandise. Much like a coupon, rebates often bring people into stores to shop. Manufacturers like them for this fact, and because rebates are seldom paid out. Four out of 10 people who are eligible for a rebate don't collect for a number of reasons. This includes forgetting about them, incorrectly filling out the form or failing to send in the required proof of purchase, or missing the deadline for submission.
Here's how to improve your odds for collecting:
· Gather all of the pertinent information required for the rebate. This will likely include the serial number, original receipt, UPC code cut out from the box, and rebate form.
· Fill out the form clearly and completely. It could be a small form, so make sure it's legible.
· Do not wait until right before the deadline to submit. If you've done something in error with the submission (even after attempting to be perfect), you'll need some time to correct the mistake.
· Be patient. A rebate can take up to 12 weeks to come and the envelope may resemble junk mail - so be on the lookout for it.
Companies count on the fact that many people will buy their product, but not send in the rebate offer. They also purposely make the rebate checks small so that they can be "lost in the mail." Others will be very stringent with their rebate submission requirements. However, if you comply you should get paid. If your rebate check bounces and you incur fees for insufficient funds, it could be rebate fraud and you have options. If you are dissatisfied with any rebate offer, file a complaint with your state's attorney general or the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov.
