What is Angel Food, you ask. Angel Food was started in 1994 by a group of Pastors who wanted to help their small community in Georgia. Today, 35 states receive shipments of food to serve over 3,500 various communities. Angel Food Ministry (AFM) calls itself a “food ministry with a servant’s heart.” Its mission is to help relieve hunger across the United States. But, as many of us have discovered, they provide so much more. They provide food, ministry, and leadership.
Our status. Since July 2007, about 30 families from our church, the community at large, and Patuxent River Naval Air Station have benefitted from Angel Food. Many have been families, but single adults have ordered, as well, for supplementation. Still, others have ordered for loved ones with specific needs. The program is not based on economic status and there is no limit as to who can or should order. AFM seeks to serve not just families who have food needs, but also anyone who wants to supplement their menus and groceries each month. It is a ministry for all.
Here is how it works. A family places an order for a “regular unit.” This unit is specially designed to feed a family of 4 for a month (it lasts longer!). Once the family orders this regular unit, then they can order multiple units and any number of the specials of the month. The specials range from steak combinations to chicken and convenience meals. December’s menu brought some special holiday offerings, which many people enjoyed. Once the order is placed and paid for, the order goes to AFM, who then sends it out for delivery on a designated day of the month. See www.angelfoodministries.com
Costs. The cost of a regular unit is $30.00. The unit retails between $47 and $78, depending on location. This is quality, name brand food-nothing that is bent, torn, or stale. The specials range from $18 to $20, depending on what you order. If you order online, you pay a small service fee for using PayPal.
Host Site. Crossroad Christian Church has become a host site for Angel Food Ministries. What this means is that we will take orders from the community and pay Angel Food directly. Even more, we can accept EBT-food stamps payments. Angel Food is approved under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
How you can take part. We will need volunteers as the program grows. Please let us know if you are interested. We have to get between 500-700 a month before Angel Food will designate CCC as a drop site, thereby sending a truck to the church directly. Right now, we go to Fredericksburg for pick up each month. We will be sending flyers out to social service agencies, shelters, and churches to get them involved. You can participate by: placing an order for yourself, a friend or family member, by volunteering your time on distribution day, or by making donations to assist with the costs of this program-gas, postage, etc. We would like to have funds to assist those among us who are most at need. Thank you in advance for your support!
